How to tailor your CV for a specific job

A tailored CV makes the most relevant parts of your experience easier to see. It should change the emphasis and clarity of your application, not invent experience you do not have.

Match the evidence to the role

Start with the role’s main responsibilities and the outcomes it is expected to deliver. Bring forward experience that demonstrates those abilities, even when it came from a different industry or job title.

Use the job description as a guide to relevance. If the employer focuses on stakeholder communication, for example, make the strongest examples of that work visible instead of leaving them buried in a long list of duties.

Keep every change truthful

Tailoring means selecting and explaining real experience. You can add relevant skills, projects, or context from your background, but you should not claim responsibility for work you did not do or inflate a result you cannot support.

If a requirement is missing, use an adjacent strength only when you can explain the connection. Honest context creates a stronger interview foundation than a keyword that you cannot discuss confidently.

Make important evidence easy to find

A recruiter should be able to understand your fit quickly. Use a clear summary, focused skills, and concise achievement-led bullets. Put the strongest evidence near the top of the sections where it is most relevant.

Use the employer’s language where it accurately describes your experience. This helps both human reviewers and software identify the relationship between your CV and the job description.

Review the tailored CV before sending it

Check that the document still reads like one coherent CV. Remove repetition, confirm that dates and titles are correct, and make sure the most important claims are supported by specific examples.

Matcherise can compare your CV with a role, help you add relevant context, and generate a tailored CV and cover letter from the information you provide.
